FAQs

Who is eligible to stay at Hospital Hospitality House?

There are three types of guests who may stay with us:

  • Out of town people with loved ones who are in Kalamazoo’s healthcare system.

  • Out of town ambulatory patients who are in Kalamazoo for medical treatment, most commonly cancer treatment. Please note: We are not a medical facility and staff are not trained or allowed to provide hands-on care or supervision of guests.

  • Out of town people who meet the above eligibility requirements, don’t need an overnight stay, and want to use our facility during the day to relax, eat a meal, use the shower or laundry, etc. Day guests cannot occupy a guest room, but have access to the common areas of the house.

If a potential guest has a residence within a reasonable travel distance from their healthcare facility in Kalamazoo, we will discourage the referral request unless special circumstances warrant otherwise.

How do I make a reservation?

Guests cannot make their own reservations. Guests must be referred by an approved referral partner. Currently, our partners are Ascension Borgess Hospital, Bronson Methodist Hospital, Bronson Cancer Center, West Michigan Cancer Center, and a variety of other local medical and behavioral health organizations. Typically, a medical social worker, chaplain, or other medical staff call us to check for room availability and make the referral. Medical clinics or centers who are not referral partners may call our business office at 269.341.7811 and request partnership.

How much does it cost to stay?

Guests can stay at no cost. Hospital Hospitality House relies on donations and grants to fund operations and pay the bills. We do ask guests to consider making a donation during or after their stay, and encourage their family and friends to do the same!

How long can I stay?

There is no maximum length of stay as long as you meet eligibility. We never make a room available to a new guest until the current guest physically checks out.

Where are you located?

We have two houses in Kalamazoo. Henson House is located at 1800 Henson Avenue near Ascension Borgess Hospital and Burdick House (and Business Office) is located at 828 South Burdick Street close to Bronson Methodist Hospital. Each house has seven guest rooms with private bathrooms.

How big are your guest rooms?

Most of our rooms have two twin beds and all rooms have a private bathroom. Each house has one Family Room with a queen bed, twin bed, and sleeper sofa. Three rooms in each house are fully ADA accessible.

Do you provide meals?

We do not provide prepared meals. On occasion, volunteers will cook a meal for our guests. We do provide basic groceries, snacks, and bottled water for guests and have a fully stocked kitchen for guest use. Guests can also purchase their own groceries from local stores and cook in the kitchen.

Can I bring my pet?

Only legitimate service animals are allowed in our facilities and in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Emotional support animals that are not service animals are not allowed.
